The Benefits of LASIK

Laser vision correction is considered one of the most life-changing elective procedures available today. Key benefits include:

  • Freedom from glasses and contact lenses for most daily activities
  • Long-term cost savings by reducing or eliminating ongoing costs of prescriptions, frames, and contacts
  • Rapid results, with many patients noticing improved vision within 24 hours
  • Permanent correction of refractive errors in a single short procedure
  • High patient satisfaction rates, with the majority of patients achieving 20/20 vision or better
  • Improved quality of life for sports, travel, and active lifestyles

“All-Laser” LASIK offers several advantages over traditional LASIK procedures that use a blade. Thanks to femtosecond technology, one of those advantages is that “All Laser” LASIK employs a femtosecond laser to create the LASIK corneal flap, which is the first step in the “All Laser” LASIK procedure.

By using a laser rather than a mechanical keratome (i.e., a surgical blade) to produce the flap, surgeons are able to better control the quality of the flap without exposing the patient to the unique risks associated with using the mechanical keratome. In using a laser to create the flap and wavefront-optimized techniques to correct the patient’s vision error, “All Laser” LASIK gives patients a chance to see equal to or potentially better than their glasses and contact lenses.

What is Laser Vision Correction?

Laser vision correction is an advanced procedure that permanently restores a patient’s vision by reshaping the cornea using specialized lasers. Also known as laser eye surgery, it is an umbrella term covering several distinct treatment options.

Laser vision correction can permanently correct common refractive errors including nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism, which is an imperfection in the eye’s curvature. For many patients, it provides a path to 20/20 vision or better, eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses.

While the specific technique varies by treatment, most procedures use specialized femtosecond and excimer lasers to alter the shape of the cornea. The cornea is the clear, transparent window at the front of the eye that focuses light onto the retina. Treatment is typically completed in around 15 minutes and is completely painless thanks to anesthetic eye drops. Recovery time varies depending on the procedure chosen.

Types of Laser Vision Correction Procedures

At ScottHyver Visioncare, we offer a broad and comprehensive range of specialized laser vision correction procedures, going well above and beyond many other providers in the Bay Area. This allows us to create tailored treatment plans that suit the individual needs of every patient.

Wavefront-Optimized “All Laser” LASIK

Wavefront-Optimized LASIK uses two different lasers to reshape the cornea with exceptional precision. Before the procedure, Wavefront Technology Mapping creates a detailed 3D map of each patient’s eyes, pinpointing the specific aberrations causing blurry vision. A femtosecond laser then creates a precise, uniform corneal flap, allowing a second excimer laser to reshape the cornea based on the 3D map data. This procedure offers a fast recovery, with most patients returning to work the next day.

SMILE Vision Correction

Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) is a minimally invasive option for patients with nearsightedness or astigmatism. Rather than creating a large corneal flap, a specialized laser forms a small, lens-shaped disc called a lenticule just beneath the corneal surface through a tiny incision. This lenticule is then gently removed, reshaping the cornea. SMILE eye surgery is an excellent alternative for patients who are not suitable for LASIK, and it offers fast recovery times and a reduced risk of dry eyes.

Customized PRK

Also known as wavefront-guided or topography-guided PRK, Customized PRK is suitable for patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, particularly those with thinner corneas or irregular eye shapes. After mapping the eye with wavefront technology and applying anesthetic drops, an excimer laser precisely vaporizes microscopic amounts of corneal tissue to correct the refractive error. A protective contact lens is placed over the eye during healing. Recovery typically takes 3 to 5 days.

Contoura Topography-Guided LASIK

Contoura Topography-Guided LASIK is one of the most advanced laser vision correction techniques available. It maps the 3D topography of the cornea by measuring 22,000 unique elevation points, treating subtle surface irregularities and accounting for the eye’s natural visual axis. An excimer laser then uses this data to smooth and reshape the cornea with extraordinary

Tailored Vision Correction: Your Personalized Treatment Plan

At ScottHyver Visioncare, we understand that no two eyes are the same. Variations in corneal thickness, shape, and surface characteristics mean that a one-size-fits-all approach simply does not work for laser eye surgery. That is why we build every treatment plan around the individual patient, considering eye anatomy, lifestyle, and personal visual goals.

Our advanced diagnostic process includes:

  • Wavefront Technology Mapping: Identifies unique light distortions in the eye to minimize visual side effects such as glare and halos.
  • Topography-Guided Mapping: Measures the precise surface curvature of the cornea for highly customized, accurate treatment.

Together, these diagnostics allow our surgeons to design a procedure that is perfectly suited to your eyes. To explore all available vision correction procedures, including non-laser options, visit our full procedures page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Laser vision correction is a type of refractive eye surgery that uses specialized lasers to reshape the cornea and permanently correct vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Common procedures include LASIK, SMILE, PRK, and Contoura LASIK.

Laser eye surgery is not suitable for everyone. In general, ideal candidates for laser vision correction:

  • Are aged 18 or over, ideally between 20 and 55
  • Have had a stable prescription with little or no change for at least one year
  • Have good overall eye health with no active conditions such as glaucoma or cataracts
  • Have no systemic health conditions that may impair healing
  • Are not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have sufficient corneal thickness for the chosen procedure

The best way to confirm your suitability is through a comprehensive pre-operative assessment. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a thorough eye examination is essential before any refractive surgery to ensure safe and effective outcomes.

Most laser vision correction procedures are completed in approximately 15 minutes per eye. The actual laser treatment itself typically lasts less than a minute, with the remainder of the time used for preparation and positioning.

No. Laser eye surgery is performed using anesthetic eye drops that numb the surface of the eye. Patients may feel mild pressure during the procedure, but it is not painful. Some mild discomfort or sensitivity may occur in the hours after treatment.

The most suitable procedure depends on your prescription, corneal thickness, eye shape, and lifestyle. A comprehensive pre-operative assessment at ScottHyver Visioncare will evaluate all of these factors and allow our surgeons to recommend the best option for your individual eyes.
